The town of Southwest Harbor is on the southern tip of the “lobster claw” of Mount Desert Island. Southwest Harbor real estate is sometimes referred to as being on “the quiet side”, the southern section of the island is not as busy with people visiting the island as the area around Bar Harbor is.
Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island
Southwest Harbor is one of the larger towns on the island and has a year round population of approximately 1,700 people. It has more of a year round feel as it is not as heavily dependent on seasonal businesses like Bar Harbor.
Southwest Harbor is known as a boat building community since it is home to several well-known boat builders like Hinckley & Morris yachts.

Somes Sound
Southwest Harbor also borders Somes Sound which is known as the only fjord on the East Coast. Somes Sound is a beautiful treasure that splits the island in two at the southern end, forming the lobster claw.
There are some beautiful hikes originating in Southwest Harbor that have gorgeous views of Somes Sound. Some notable trails are Flying Mountain Trail, Acadia Mountain Trail & Saint Sauveur Trail.
